In Greece, naturism is allowed in a few licensed locations but is tolerated in plenty of other places. Most of the beaches which tolerate nudism are remote and quite well hidden. The nudism friendly areas are usually separated from the rest of the beach by natural rock formations.

Although there are three more nudist-friendly beaches in Crete –including Red Beach – Filaki Beach is the only official nude beach in Crete. While the nudist-friendly beaches can briefly turn into clothing-required beaches – particularly in July and August – Filaki Beach is a nude beach during the entire summer season.

Location and how to get to Filaki Beach

The beach is located on the south coast of Crete, off the road from Hotel Vritomartis.

To get to the beach, at about 500 m before entering Chora Sfakion you’ll see a road to the left which takes you to Hotel Vritomartis. On the left of this street you’ll see another small street which will take you to the beach. As you probably guessed, the hotel is also nudist friendly (and is the only one of this kind in Greece).

The beach is separated into two parts: half for naturists, half for everyone else. It’s pretty common for naturists to leave their clothes in the car and go to the beach naked.

There’s also a shuttle bus running from the hotel to the beach at regular intervals.

Facilities

On the beach you’ll find a bar (operated by the hotel). You can also rent umbrellas and sun beds. If you feel like exploring the surrounding waters, you can rent a canoe.

Hotel Vritomaris

Although the outside areas are naturist friendly, none of the indoor areas are clothing optional.

Taking its name from an ancient Minoan goddess, Hotel Vritomaris is built in traditional Greek style, overlooking the sea. The hotel has a lovely bar and indoor restaurant. All rooms have AC, phone and radio. Children are welcome and they can use the children’s pool and the playground.

The hotel offers five types of rooms and three types of bungalows. Prices range between €68 and €126 per night per room based on half board. The bungalows prices range between €98 and €107 per night per bungalow based on half board. The rooms accommodate up to 5 persons (type 5) while the bungalows accommodate up to 4 person (type 3).
