Hiking the E4 European Long Distance Path: Crete

crete-hikingHiking is a great way to see Greece. Actually, it’s probably the best way to explore everything that Crete has to offer. The island is not all about the posh resorts, bars, tavernas and beaches…

E4 – general information

The European Long Distance Paths are a network of footbath that cross European countries. There are a total of 12 such paths and two of them (E4 and E6) run through Greece.

E4 starts in Spain at its southernmost point and runs through France , Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, ending in Greece.

Unfortunately in many countries there is little information about the path, including poorly marked sectors. It’s the same situation in Greece. The path runs through Greece from the Bulgarian border to the foot of the Peloponnes Peninsula and then continues by ferry to Crete. In Crete, the path is generally marked with red signs.

Accommodation might not available each night so carry a tent and several days supply of food. Although you can find plenty of streams along the path, it’s still a good idea to carry enough water supply.

Depending on when you plan the hike you might have the nasty surprise to find the mountain refuges closed. Although you can hike from May to early October, most accommodation along the way is open only in July, August and possibility during the weekends.

Always carry a map with you. You should be able to find them in bookstores or tourist information booths or you can order them online before you leave. Do note that you won’t be able to find very detailed maps though.

E4 in Crete

There’s one long hiking path on the island of Crete, which is part of the E4. It begins at Kastelli (west part of Crete) and then crosses the island reaching Kato Zakros (east part of the island), where it ends.

The terrain is varied and the difficulty ranges from easy walks to difficult mountain trekking. Unfortunately, in some parts it’s not well marked. The sections range from 1.3 km to 32 km. Hiking experience is not required unless you plan to tackle the longer and harder sections.

Some of the most beautiful sections of the path are:

  • Kallikratis – Argyroupoli: 16 km, about 5 hours
  • Argyroupoli – Angouseliana: 23 km, about 8 hours, easy walk
  • Spili – Gerakari: 18.5 km, about 8 hours, across Mount Kedros

Along the way, you’ll be able to find mountain huts but the accommodation needs to be pre-arranged. The mountaineering clubs of Hania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lassithi maintain the huts.
